The city of Zabrze is located in the western part of the Upper Silesian Agglomeration and covers a surface area of 80.40 km 2. Zabrze has about 175,000 inhabitants. The city is known from research centres such as the Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal, Institute of Environmental Engineering of Polish Academy of Sciences and the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases. Also in Zabrze are subsidiaries of public universities, among others, Medical University of Silesia, Silesian University of Technology and the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice.
